A councillor has claimed that she has received around 100 complaints in relation to Maynooth University (MU) students parking in local estates.

The motion was submitted by Fianna Fáil Cllr Donna Phelan at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, November 7 last.

Her motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy.

In response, Kildare County Council told her that this was a matter for the MD's councillors to agree upon.

According to Cllr Phelan, the issue has "escalated" in recent years and is especially affecting residents on the Moyglare Road in a negative manner.

Following the meeting, she specified to the Leinster Leader that the issue is negatively affecting residents in Moyglare Village, Moyglare Abbey, Moyglare Hall, Moyglare Meadows, Silken Vale, Brookfield, and Kingsbury. In addition, Cllr Phelan said that she had received "about 100 complaints through social media and email" in relation to the matter.

"I went up to Moyglare Abbey, where residents have made signs and put them on the trees to highlight to students to park safely, but they were ignored," she added.

Cllr Phelan further said: "The [local] GAA [club] offered its 2 overflow carparks and they are full everyday also."

Cllr McEvoy also spoke at the meeting, and he said that while he supported the motion, he was of the view that it is "not just down to MU [to resolve the issue]".

In addition, Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney suggested that a park and ride facility could be the solution to the parking issues.

After the matter was put to a vote, it was overwhelmingly agreed by the councillors to write and send a letter to MU in order to seek a meeting with them.
