Kildare Minister welcomes acquisition of lands at Castletown House, Celbridge

Around €500,000 in damage was caused to OPW vehicles and facilities at a site used by the OPW to allow their staff to access Castletown House in June

Local Minister James Lawless TD today (Wednesday, November 19) welcomed the announcement of the State’s purchase of lands at Castletown House in Celbridge, Co Kildare, describing it as a transformative step that will finally resolve long-standing access issues at the historic estate.

“The acquisition of these lands marks a significant and positive development for Castletown House, for Celbridge, and for all who value this nationally important heritage site,” Minister Lawless said.

“Securing proper access has been a major challenge in recent years, and today’s announcement brings a long-awaited and very welcome resolution.”

The purchase follows a Value for Money business case, and a special purchase valuation assessment conducted by an independent commercial estate agency and has been fully sanctioned by the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Services and Digitalisation (DPER).

Minister Lawless added: “This decision provides the stability and certainty needed to protect Castletown House for future generations. I welcome the engagement with local representatives and community groups, and I look forward to working closely with them as this important project moves ahead.”
