The man told the court he works as a plumber and is now living outside County Kildare. He said he intends to start a plumbing business.
When this happens, he said, he will be able to pay more maintenance to his wife for his child.
Judge Desmond Zaidan initially suggested he pay €25 a week but increased this to €40 and also told the man to assist with back-to-school and medical bills for the child by contributing 30% of the costs.
The judge told the man to come back next year when his business is established and to increase his payments. He said he would take action if he thinks the man is "ducking or diving.”
