Developers favour one national newspaper for placing notices when seeking planning permission from Kildare County Council.

That was the claim made by Cllr Peter Melrose, at a KCC meeting as he called for KCC to establish and publish a list of approved local newspapers and online publications for the purpose of advertising planning applications. He didn’t identify the newspaper.

Cllr Melrose said builders should be required to advertise planning applications in at least one approved local publication - either in print or online - in addition to any national newspaper prescribed by the Minister for Housing.

He welcomed an undertaking from KCC official Alan Dunney that a review of the newspapers that can be used is underway.

Mr Dunney said a list of approved newspapers is available on the KCC website and in the KCC planning department.

He added if a developer does not advertise their proposed development in one of the approved newspapers, the application is deemed invalid.

Mr Dunney said KCC is reviewing newspapers, including national newspapers which circulate in County Kildare “with a view to updating the approved list (which will be) displayed in KCC offices and online before year end.”

Mr Dunney also said that a notice has to be erected on the site of the development

Cllr Nuala Killeen said it is a worry for local residents interested in a planning application - if they cannot see the newspaper notice.
