A ban on Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) for the Main Street of one County Kildare town was suggested by a local councillor.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick expressed his view of restricting HGVs from accessing the Main Street of Clane at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Friday, December 5 last.

His view echoes a recent call made by Labour Party Cllr Anne Breen for the Naas MD, who urged Kildare County Council (KCC) to ban HGVs from driving through Sallins.

While in attendance at this meeting, he asked KCC: "Can KCC confirm any plans to introduce a HGV ban on the Main Street of  Clane when the new Ring Road opens?"

In response, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting that it had no such plans.

However, Cllr Fitzpatrick did not seem to be dissuaded by this reply — he remained convinced that having HGVs on the Main Street would negatively impact on traffic in Clane.

Cllr Fitzpatrick also asserted to KCC: "As soon as the Ring Road is opened, I will be putting this item back on the agenda."
