A green space located in County Kildare would not be big enough for a dog park, according to Kildare County Council (KCC).
The suggestion to use the space as a dog park was dismissed at the most recent Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, December 5 last.
The potential creation of a dog park in North Kildare came about when Labour Party councillor Angela Feeney motioned for KCC to conduct a feasibility study for the installation of a dog park at Pound Park in Maynooth.
Her motion was seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Tim Durkan.
However, KCC responded that Pound Park "would not be considered big enough" to facilitate a dog park.
"Therefore, it is not proposed to install a dog park at this location," KCC added.
Speaking further on her motion, Cllr Feeney told KCC: "After walking around the park [following the initial submission of her motion], I would agree, but I do think the idea of providing a dog park for Maynooth would be welcome."
Cllr Feeney also suggested raising the matter again at the upcoming Carton Master Plan discussions.
She further said that the Pound Park area is "crying out for development".
In addition, Cllr Durkan said that other locations can be considered for a dog park in Maynooth.
However, he also warned KCC that, in his view, such a dog park "needs to be very well martialled [appropriately]", especially when it comes to allowing restricted dog breeds in the area.
Cllr Durkan elaborated: "Any dog is capable of biting, but some have the potential to do more damage than others."
Cllr Feeney then came back into the conversation to jokingly tell Cllr Durkan: "I like your suggestion, but it is a bit 'woof'!"
Following the occurrence of some laughter (and some facepalms), Cllr Feeney replied: "Look, it's the silly season!"
