Defending solicitor Brian Larkin said the case arose out of a tragic accident and the defendant was driving a bus.

Sgt James Birmingham told Judge Desmond Zaidan that the Director of Public Prosecutions will examine the file and that a pedestrian, aged in his 30s, lost his life.

Sgt Birmingham said the defendant made no reply when cautioned.

He said that the deceased was making a phone call when the bus ”swayed into the hard shoulder.”

The sergeant said the defendant had produced an Irish driving licence, a Bengali driving licence and an Italian identification card.

He also said that a garda is liaising with the family of the deceased, who was pronounced dead in Tallaght Hospital.

The court also heard that the defendant works with Dublin Coach but he is out sick and he had no information about whether he is being paid. He also said there was no objection to legal aid.

Judge Zaidan passed on his sympathies to the family of the deceased and adjourned the case to March 18. He also approved the appointment of a Bengali translator to the case.

The defendant was granted court bail and is to sign on three times a week at a named garda station in Cork.
