Naas Roads Policing Unit in Kildare this week seized an e-scooter from a 14-year-old rider who was carrying a passenger, due to the vehicle not meeting legal requirements.

The e-scooter was non-compliant in the following areas:

  • capable of speeds in excess of 20 km/h

  • weight exceeded 25 kg

  • motor output in excess of 400 watts

These factors meant the e-scooter was not compliant with current legislation and posed a serious risk to both the rider and other road users.

A spokesperson from An Garda Síochána Kildare noted: “Parents and guardians are reminded that not all e-scooters are legal for use in public places, and that riders must comply with age, speed, weight, and passenger restrictions.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Enforcement will continue.”
