There are insufficient parking spaces at a new housing development planned for north Kildare.

Kildare County Council is planning a 36 dwelling social housing project, which will be provided in Leixlip.

The age friendly is proposed for the corner of Mill Lane and Main Street and comprises 33 apartments and three bungalow type homes.

According to Kildare County Council it will be accessible to all services and will have a community room. It will be provided and managed by the Clúid Housing Association, a not for profit provider of social housing.

KCC has conceded that “parking is limited” to eight spaces because of its town centre location and  because it has to conform with sustainable development guidelines and the number is within county development plan guidelines.

But Cllr Bernard Caldwell said the number is too small and he compared it with the number of cycle racks (36), asking if there will be that level of interest in cycling among those likely to live there.

“Senior citizens have cars and where will people park when they visit someone living there ? They're not all using bikes, scooters and buses,” said Cllr Caldwell.

He added: “I’m not against it but I don’t understand the number of parking spaces and cycle places."

Cllr Nuala Killeen said that it had been hoped that the McAuley Place in Naas, which provides an alternative to institutional residential care for older people, would have been examined. She also said there is a need for more community facilities

Cllr Killeen said a workshop or some form of dialogue is needed and another meeting on the project will take place early in 2026.
