The Kildare Carlow Division of An Garda Síochána has issued a warning to the public amid a rise in burglaries.

Taking to its official Facebook page, the division said: "While we continue to work proactively to prevent further incidents, we are asking for the continued support and vigilance of our local communities.

"As we move into the spring months, many people are spending more time outdoors around their homes, farms and gardens."

However, it also stressed that this "can create opportunities for crime if basic security is overlooked".

The division also outlined some facts related to burglaries — these include:

  • Cash and jewellery are the most commonly stolen items
  • One in four burglaries involve entry through an unlocked door or window
Common vulnerabilities include: doors, windows, gates or sheds left unlocked; keys left in vehicles or machinery; tools or equipment left unsecured; cash or jewellery left visible; property not marked or recorded

It also outlined a number of preventative measures that people can take to reduce the risk of burglaries:

  • Lock doors, windows, gates and sheds
  • Remove keys from vehicles and machinery
  • Secure tools and equipment when not in use
  • Keep cash and jewellery out of sight or in a secure safe
  • Mark and record property ("We recommend the Garda Property App", the division added)
  • Use external lighting and CCTV where appropriate
  • Report suspicious behaviour promptly

"Good habits, neighbour awareness and timely reporting all help to reduce opportunities for crime," the division further said. "If you see anything suspicious or have information, contact 999 immediately."

It concluded by asserting: "Working together, we can help keep our communities safe."
