Naas Roads Policing Unit was on patrol recently on Kildare's M7 motorway, when they detected two articulated HGV drivers holding mobile phones while driving.

A €120 Fixed Charge Penalty Notice was issued to each driver;

Three penalty points were also issued to each driver.

A garda spokesperson said of the offence: “These are professional drivers. Operating multi-tonne vehicles. At motorway speeds. A moment of distraction in an articulated HGV doesn’t just risk a fine — it risks lives.”

The Garda spokesperson added: “If you’re behind the wheel, your only job is to drive. Not scroll. Not text. Not check notifications.

“Holding a mobile phone while driving is illegal. It is reckless. And it will be enforced. No message is worth a life.”
