A 17 year old, who cannot be identified because of his age, appeared before Naas District Court because of his alleged role in the incident and was accompanied by his father.

Sgt Mary Meade told the court the defendant and three others were involved in a fight on September 7 at 3.30pm, which started outside the premises and then went inside.

She said it will be alleged that the defendant attempted to injure another male.

The sergeant said slash-like injuries were sustained and one person sustained a cut to the armpit. Two bladed instruments were used in the incident and members of the public were present .

Sgt Meade also said CCTV images of the incident were obtained.

Defending solicitor Tim Kennelly said he had seen the images and the defendant was “set upon” by two individuals who attacked him, causing him serious harm.

Mr Kennelly said all of the defendant’s actions amounted to self defence and “he retreated to protect himself.”

He said the defendant was "pursued through the shopping centre.”

Judge Desmond Zaidan sent the case forward to Naas Circuit Court and said that if an alibi formed any part of his defence details of this must be provided to the prosecution in advance. The judge also granted free legal aid to provide for a solicitor and a barrister.
