Families in south Kildare are already feeling the effects of the “illegal” war of the US and Israel against Iran in their pockets, according to Sinn Féin Deputy Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh.

Deputy Ní Raghallaigh was addressing the Taoiseach during 'Questions on Policy or Legislation' in the Dáil on Wednesday, March 4 last.

According to Deputy Ní Raghallaigh, we have already seen the inflationary effects of the US and Israel's war against Iran, with families in Kildare “feeling this pressure in their pockets.”

“I was informed last night that one company based in Kildare South increased their price of oil fills by €200 overnight. There is no question that this is price gouging. This is price-gouging, pure and simple.

“Families are struggling and we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis. A rise like this is the difference between heating the house or not. Can the Taoiseach tell me what his Government will do to curb the companies that are making profits and ordinary families suffer?

“Will he reconsider a rise in carbon taxes that would make it even more expensive for people to heat their homes next year?”

Responding to the Deputy, An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin said that Minister Deputy O'Brien “has already met with the companies.”

Also, he confirmed, the CRU is currently “investigating the market” and in particular, the wholesale to retail prices.

“That is under discussion by the CRU at this round”, the Taoiseach added.

“Along with that, the Minister, Deputy Peter Burke, is dealing with the situation as well as with the competition authorities - the competition authority - to clarify what the various bodies are doing.

“No body should take advantage of this crisis. Clearly some of them are doing it. We will be happy to do anything we can do.”
