Kildare County Council is working with Waterways Ireland to determine what traffic calming measures can be implemented at Healy's Bridge, Prosperous, where a number of traffic incidents have occurred.

Confirmation came from the council following a question tabled by Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick (FF) at a recent Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting.

Cllr Fitzpatrick told the MD meeting there have been three incidents at Healy's Bridge in the last 12 months, and he was sure Healy's Bridge in Prosperous was “one of the banes” of the particular council team at the moment.

There was “probably” a one-way system in the location for six months out of the last 12 months, he said, which in itself has caused much disruption for local residents.

The council could not just continue repairing the bridge, he said, and something needed to be done to alleviate accidents in the area.

A council official confirmed that recent works have been completed on Healy's Bridge.

The bridge is a Waterways Ireland bridge, he pointed out, with KCC “stepping in” to get the works complete, and Waterways Ireland reimbursing the council.

KCC was working with Waterways Ireland to determine what traffic calming measures can be implemented at this location.

Two of the issues, the official noted, “are down to speed”, particularly late in the evening and early in the morning.

The first step, he pointed out, is to determine the speeds in the area, then implement traffic calming measures.

Noting how “frustrating” the problem is, Cllr Fitzpatrick said he has lived in the area for the past 30 years, and in recent times there have been no fewer than three traffic incidents at Healy's Bridge.

“Something needs to be done”, he said.

A report issued by the council stated: “Works are ongoing at present to complete repair works to Healy’s Bridge and are due to be complete by the end of February.”
