The clean-up was held as part of the An Taisce National Spring Clean 2026

The community of Newbridge came together to give Eyre Street and the Market Square a makeover.

Residents, businesses, community groups and local agencies came together for a major Spring Clean organised by SAFER Newbridge.

The clean-up operation, which was held as part of the An Taisce National Spring Clean 2026, saw volunteers roll up their sleeves and get stuck into some of the busiest parts of Newbridge town centre.

From litter picks to repainting benches and bollards, cleaning signage and tidying up public areas, the focus was simple: to make both Eyre Street and Market Square cleaner, brighter and more welcoming for everyone who uses them.

A number of contributors took part in the clean-up, including: Newbridge Tidy Towns Association; The Probation Service; SURF; Newbridge Malayali Association; Foróige Drug Prevention & Education Initiative; Newbridge Community Development; and An Garda Síochána Kildare, as well as local residents, business owners and local volunteers.

'SHOWING PRIDE'

Speaking about the day of action, Newbridge-based Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender said: "Eyre Street and Market Square are at the heart of Newbridge.

"They are places people walk through every day, where people shop, meet, work and live; today was about showing pride in those spaces and giving them the care they deserve."placeholder image

He continued: "It was brilliant to see so many people out, and to see residents, businesses, community groups and agencies all working side by side.

"No fuss, no speeches, just people getting stuck in and making a visible difference; that is the kind of community spirit that makes Newbridge what it is."

Cllr Pender also thanked those who helped make the day happen.

He added: "Days like this show what can happen when people care about where they live and are willing to do something practical about it."placeholder image
