She said the dog weighs 10 ½  stone

A woman sustained a facial injury after being bitten by the face by an XL Bully dog.

She further claimed, at Naas District Court, that her husband had encouraged the animal to attack her.

During a family law hearing, the said she had been forced from the family home “due to financial and domestic abuse” over a year prior to the hearing and she now lives with an elderly relative.

She said the dog weighs 10 ½  stone.

She further alleged that the man, who was not present or represented, had used the dog to intimidate her and to attack her.

She said the home had been destroyed by her husband and the dog.

She also alleged he had turned off the electricity and the water in the dwelling. She claimed that when she would approach him, he would call the dog.

She further alleged that on one occasion he accelerated towards her and her mother when they were  crossing the road as a  zebra crossing and he drove through.

She said she had reported the matter to the gardaí who referred her to the dog warden.

Judge Desmond Zaidan granted the woman an interim protection order  and he told a garda inspector in court that the gardaí should address the complaint, describing the dog warden service as toothless "excuse the pun.”

He expressed concern that the dog had already bitten.

He adjourned the matter for a fuller hearing to November 23.
