Fire at Magee barracks threatens hundreds of homes
9 Sept 2015
Another fire at the disused Magee barracks in Kildare town this morning and last night sparked calls for action from the Department of Defence. Emergency fire services rushed to the scene of the barracks yesterday evening to stop a raging fire and were back at the scene again this morning. The fire services were called this morning due to a smouldering fire. FF TD Deputy Sean O Fearghaill urged the Department of Defence to put a plan in place for the disused barracks. Meanwhile hundreds of people living in Rowan Village, Ruanbeag Manor, Campion Crescent, BeachGrove, Miletta Park and St. Barbara’s Park are at risk of having their lives or homes lost. Deputy O Fearghaill said: “The site needs to be controlled.” There has been ongoing problems with antisocial behaviour at the barracks in recent years described by Deputy O Fearghaill as a 'long- standing problem.'
