Council urged to fine landlords for idle premises

Naas
Kildare County Council has been urged to slap a levy on empty shops in towns and villages to force landlords to develop the sites. Councillor Sorcha O’Neill called for a central policy from the local authority to stop commercial premises lying idle such as in Naas. The Sinn Fein politician said: "The Council should devise a policy to implement a levy on commercial properties that are empty in our towns and villages. "The rate should be set high enough to motivate landlords to develop and utilise shops and premises." The issue will be raised at the Council's monthly meeting in Naas tomorrow afternoon.
