LE Niamh crew rescues 124 from a rubber boat

The LE Niamh, whose 57-member crew includes two Co Kildare navy officers, rescued 124 people from a rubber boat in the Mediterranean this morning. The vessel is now on its way to a second rescue operation in the area. The Irish Naval vessel arrived at the first scene, just off the north east coast of Tripoli at around 8am. Two ribs were deployed and 107 men, 14 women and three children were rescued and brought on board the LE Niamh where they were given food, water and medical assistance.
