Exclusive: Auction date in sight for Magee Barracks, interested parties already declared
19 Sept 2015
KildareNow can reveal there is an end in sight for the ongoing antisocial behaviour and contention re the delapidated Magee Barracks in Kildare Town. Deputy Martin Heydon, who has been pushing for the sale of the site for some time now has notified KildareNow that the site will be going up for sale, auction date expected in November next. "The Dept of Defence is not set up to manage such an extensive site. Eight acres had been given over to the Educate Together and Gael Scoil sites, leaving 56 acres in total. The residents living in housing backing onto Magee Barracks have endured years of anti-social behaviour and I know they welcome the recent opening of Educate Together. I'm happy to reveal that despite repeated indications in the past that the site would be sold, finally an auction is imminent. An auctioneer has been appointed with interested parties declared and I'm confident an auction date will be agreed for November". Deputy Heydon added that such a large site in the centre of a town makes it a prime site location, and development should lead to jobs creation, with KCC seeking a mixed development, rather than just housing or commercial purpose. "As a heritage town" he added "It's vital that its development is sympatethic and advantageous to Kildare Town"
