There more bad news for weary Kildare rail commuters this evening. The Government has decided to scrap plans for the underground Dart that would have linked Heuston to Connolly and Tara Street rail stations. The new link would have allowed Kildare commuters easy access to not just the city centre, but also the Bray and Howth Dart lines. Kildare North Social Democrat TD Catherine Murphy has condemned today’s cabinet decision to scrap the project, despite almost €40million having already been spent on it. “We are talking here about pushing such a vital transport option off into the next decade and even that is based on the assumption that Fine Gael will be in a position to influence the Capital Projects Plan next year. Only last week we had traffic chaos which almost brought the city to a standstill following a fire in the Port Tunnel because we have an overdependence on private cars.”
