Kildare TD alarmed that 10 gardai injured on duty every week
25 Sept 2015
Government TD Bernard Durkan said he's alarmed that 10 gardai injured on duty every week. Figures showed that a total of 2,113 officers were injured on the job and subsequently had to take sick leave between 1st January 2011 and 8th July 2015. Mr Durkan said: "These figures are alarming and present a serious threat to the administration of law and order. "The high number of Gardaí getting injured on duty is a worry. It also means that these Gardaí are then no longer available for duty. The TD claimed that there was a growing disrespect for authority in general and An Garda Siochana. He added: "As well as being a security issue, attacks on our law enforcement authorities result in increased costs arising from the resultant sick leave and equally importantly, a reduction in the number of Gardaí available for duty during the period of recovery from injury. "There is a need for more respect for our Gardaí and re-affirmation of support for their work, which they often do in very trying circumstances."
