Large crowd expected at Magee Barracks protest in Kildare town

Magee Barracks
Scores of locals are expected to protest outside Magee Barracks over the facility lying idle in Kildare town. The Army installation, which closed in the 1990s, was mooted as a possible location for housing refugees fleeing war in Syria. Last month a fire broke out at the barracks that resulted in five units of the Kildare Fire Service battling the large blaze for a number of hours. Locals have blamed the site as a magnet for anti-social behaviour such as outdoor drinking in recent times. The protest group are also protesting against the failure to hand over 10 acres of land to the town that they had been promised with the closure of the barracks.
