Teachers ready to go on strike in the coming months
25 Oct 2015
It looks as if the Teacher's Union of Ireland could be set to go on strike in the coming months reports the Sunday Business Post. This week saw the first of the planned rail strikes, while Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus workers are also planning strike action, so a third workers union to go on strike could cause chaos. Teachers are threatening to strike following comments made by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin in which he appeared to single out teachers as a sector of public service workers who could be excluded from increases in pay. "We will exhaust all other avenues first, but if there is no talking, industrial action will take place this side of the election," said TUI president Gerry Quinn. The union is "currently strategising as to when to have ballots, but it will be this side of the general election," he said.
