Kildare ranks third nationally for counties that receive the rent supplement
7 Nov 2015
Kildare ranks only behind major city counties Dublin and Cork for the amount of people that are in need of the rent supplement. The national figure for the amount of people receiving the allowance is 63,826 and Kildare county receives a substantial portion of that. A total of 3,514 people received the supplement in the county in September 2015, which is about half of the amount who receive it in Cork(7,140) and a fraction of the number of recipients in Dublin(24,333). Monaghan ranks in as the county with the least amount of people receiving the support, with just 284 people on the register there for it. Rent supplement is paid to people living in private rented accommodation and who cannot afford to pay the price of their rent from their own resources. It's estimated that the scheme costs the government around €298 million.
