Minister meets troops on refugee rescue mission in Med
10 Nov 2015
Minister for Defence Simon Coveney and Defence Forces Chief of Staff Mark Mellet visited L.É. Samuel Beckett which is currently on humanitarian search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean. As part of their visit they met with the ship’s Captain, Lieutenant Commander Anthony Geraghty, and members of the crew to review the ongoing operation and to commend the important work they are doing in addressing the humanitarian fallout from the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. L.É. Samuel Beckett replaced L.É. Niamh at the end of September and to date the crew have rescued 562 migrants and assisted in the transfer of a further 232 migrants to a port of safety, continuing Ireland’s valuable contribution to the search and rescue mission - Operation PONTUS.
