Teen (15) warned he could be in detention centre for Christmas

A Co Kildare teen (15) who broke strict bail conditions was warned that he could be in a detention centre for Christmas. The youngster is charged with criminal offences and cannot be named for legal reasons. Naas District Court heard that the teen was put in a detention centre for the past week after he broke bail conditions by hanging around criminal gang members he was warned to stay away from. The youth's defence solicitor said that his client lived with his mother and wanted to spend Christmas with her rather than in a detention centre for young offenders. Judge Desmond Zaidan said to the teenager: "You have to get a grip on your life, young man. "You're 15 years old. You should be going to school and playing football - not inside a detention centre." He added: "It is tragic and sad to see a 15-year-old before the criminal courts. It's heart-wrenching. Addressing the youth, he added: "You don't realise how vulnerable you are." The judge told the court: "There's nothing wrong with being mischievous but there's a big difference between being mischievous and being allegedly involved in criminality." Judge Zaidan remanded the youth in detention for a further seven days and adjourned the case to December 10.
