There will be a large number of job losses for residents in Athy, Naas, Newbridge and Maynooth after a major company was today taken over by a liquidator today. Movie rental chain Xtra-Vision was appointed a liquidator in court after they revealed that they were unable to pay their debts. Hilco Capital, the company's owners, asked the court if they could appoint Mr Michael Mc Ateer of Thornton Ireland as the liquidator, a plea which Mr Justice Paul Gilligan granted. Xtra-Vision have stores based in Athy, Naas, Newbridge and Maynooth, all of which are likely to close and the loss of jobs will begin immediately. A spokesperson for Xtra-Vision today said that the appointment of a liquidator would save some jobs, but the bulk of the company's employees would have their contracts terminated. The emergence of services such as Netflix and Amazon TV has led to a massive decline in the rentals of DVDs in the past number of years. Xtra-Vision have vowed to honour any existing gift vouchers that people may have.
