Drunken man told gardai to 'cop on' outside ex girlfriend's house in Naas

A man was fined €700 for public order offences after he was arrested outside his ex girlfriend's house in Naas. Naas District Court heard that gardai were called to Monread Close estate in the town on the eve of St Patrick's Day. An intoxicated man was seen shouting and banging on the door of a house where his ex partner lived. When approached by gardai, he initially told them to 'cop on'. He eventually agreed to requests to leave the area but returned a few minutes later. Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "It was a waste of Garda time to deal with this drunken fool chasing his ex girlfriend." The court heard the man had a previous conviction for possession of drugs for which he received a suspended sentence in 2009. Defence solicitor Tony Hanahoe said: "This was an affair of the heart. Like many men, he had to get a few drinks before he could call on his former girlfriend. But he added: "She didn't want him back." The defendant admitted he was 'way too drunk' and didn't remember any of the events on the night. Judge Zaidan imposed a €700 fine and gave him six months to pay.
