The probation act has been ordered for a man who appeared at Naas District Court today in relation to being found with a knuckle duster. Evidence was given that the man was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis and a knuckle duster. The court heard how the accused had previous convictions for the misuse of drugs act, road traffic offences and possession of a weapon. Defence Solicitor, Sarah Connolly outlined how the accused, a 38- year-old man,  bought the knuckle duster at a market in Ireland and wanted to have it as an ornament. Ms Connolly said: "He was going to sand it down, he had some brass paint and was going to have it as a little project. He was was going to display it as an ornament." Judge Desmond Zaidan asked Ms Connolly if her client is the 'full shilling' to which she responded that he is. Judge Zaidan said: "The knuckle duster is a lethal weapon." Inspector Mel Smith gave evidence that a previous conviction was for being in possession of a baton. Defence outlined how the accused was going out fishing when he was caught and had not smoked the cannabis. The court heard Defence outline how the accused is a 'recovering heroin addict' who is taking 80ml of methadone daily. She said: "He is on a detox programme."
