Video reveals nearest thing Dublin has to an underground - and it's all set for Kildare commuters from this Monday

A new era for commuters will unfold this Monday morning as trains will operate from Kildare to Dublin via the Phoenix Park tunnel that has been unused for passenger services for many years. This new direct service will link Kildare and west Dublin to Drumcondra, Dublin Connolly, Tara Street, Dublin Pearse and Grand Canal Dock. The Phoenix Park Tunnel was built in 1877 and begins near Heuston Station before going under the Phoenix Park for almost 700 metres and then re-emerging close to the junction of the Cabra Road and Navan Road. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has funded the €13.7 million upgrade. Iarnród Éireann has produced this video about the work on the tunnel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2G2HuqnRjY It joins with the Sligo line near Glasnevin, before continuing to Dublin Connolly. Historically the line had not been used for regular passenger trains, with most traffic through the tunnel being freight or carriages and engines shunted between Connolly and Heuston for maintenance. It had occasionally been used for special passenger services, notably "GAA Specials."
