Clane hotel will host opening for Neil Delamere's tour

Neil Delamere
An internationally renowned comedian who was born and raised on the Co Kildare border is now getting set for a brand new 50 days tour kicking off in Clane next week. Edenderry's Neil Delamere has announced details of his brand new tour, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Pensioner, which features four Kildare dates with the opening at The Westgrove Hotel, Clane on 1st December and The Moat Theatre, Naas on 27th December. The show he will be touring is called Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Pensioner. It is a based on a real day earlier this year when Neil took part in Meals on Wheels, with his father John. Now 82-years-old, Neil's father John, a former Bord Na Móna worker, delivers meals to the elderly. On the day in question, Neil joined his father, on a day that they wanted to get all the meals delivered to get home in time for a horse race. While not an official tribune to his father, ‘Butch Cassidy’ is underpinned by the close father and son relationship. There’s even some recorded comments from John. Neil said: "My father is enjoying having himself in the show." Due to a hectic schedule, Neil does not get to visit Edenderry regularly, so for him the drive around the town was going down 'memory lane.' He said: "It was physical tour around all parts of the town that I would not normally take." Growing up in Edenderry where he played golf and squash in the local clubs and attended the local schools, he never could imagine that he would become an internationally renowned comedian. He said: "There was not a theatre in the town when I was growing up, you might see a comedian on the television." Neil Delamere went on to DCU and studied Computer Applications, then  became a Software Engineer and worked in Stoneybatter. It was only after seeing a live stand up comedy show that he began to think it was something he would like to do. His first gig was in the International Bar. He said: "I fell in love with it." He was in his early twenties and after about a year of stand -up comedy he won an RTE award for new comedy which provided some funding that enabled him to develop his comedy. The highlights of his career are many, one that stands out for him is his first gig at Vicar St or performing stand -up comedy at the Ulster Hall in Belfast. Getting a mention on The Scotsman after his performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was also a triumph. “Quantum comic…you’ll be hard pressed to find a more gifted comic on the Fringe” - The Scotsman. A UK critic who saw Delamere perform Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Pensioner at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe wrote afterwards:“It’s a great show because it doesn’t feel rigid at all. It’s a show that has the promise of something fresh and original each night along with his prepared material. The guy is genuinely affable, but funny too – he’s not pandering to anyone; you can see that the act is what it is, a hysterical hour with a hilarious comedian”. Separate to comedy, Neil is currently honing his acting talents for a three-part drama series for BBC Northern Ireland, details of which will be announced in early 2018. Neil will also make a welcome return to TV screens this autumn in the 11th season of the ever-popular topical news and current affairs panel show The Blame Game on BBC Northern Ireland. Delamere is one of the stars of the show, alongside Colin Murphy, Jake O’Kane and host Tim McGarry. The show regularly gets more audience share than Graham Norton and Delamere is now considered an “adopted northerner” who can sell out successive nights at the Ulster Hall. "I wouldn’t like people to think that I slag off one side more than the other. It’s important to me that I go to both sides. If you get it right, you’ve probably offended everyone:" said Delamere. An accomplished broadcaster as well as comic, Neil is the host of his own hugely-popular two-hour weekend show on Today FM, Neil Delamere’s Sunday Best (Sunday’s on Today FM 11am-1pm). "I’m just trying to make compelling radio. When I listen to radio I don’t necessarily want someone to be funny all the time, as long as they are interesting”, commented Delamere.
