A man in his 40s has died from a gunshot wound after his wife and son fled a house near Athy after a suspected domestic incident.
The man died after gardaí surrounded the rural farmhouse in Wolfhill, near the Laois-Kildare border, at around 3pm yesterday.
He was alone in the property at the time of his death.
It is understood a family member alerted officers to the emergency situation.
A Garda spokesman said: "Gardai attended an incident at Wolfhill, Co Laois at approximately 3pm.
"Gardai are now investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death of a male in his 40s.
"No other person is being sought in relation to the incident.
"The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) have been notified of the investigation. The office of the State Pathologist has also been notified.
"Gardai are awaiting the results of the post mortem to determine the course of the investigation."
