A man told Naas District Court today that he was 'young and stupid' when he drove under the influence of illegal drugs.

The 36-year-old with an address in Newbridge appeared before Naas District Court charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant, at Old Connell Weir, Newbridge, on May 2, 2011.

Defence Solicitor, Séamus Boyle said: "He was stupidly using cannabis. He has now stopped using cannabis."

Evidence was given that the accused is employed part-time in the retail sector.

In court, the accused said: "I need my car for work."

The accused added: "I was young and stupid."

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "My hands are tied. The law of the land says that if you are convicted while driving under the influence of drugs, then you are four years off the road."

Defence said: "He has learned his lesson."

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a four years driving ban and fined the accused €400, with six months to pay.
