Mass shooting threats at Co Kildare school spurs calls for new safety guidelines
By Louise McCarthy 8:20 Thursday 7th of December 2017

A Co Kildare politician is now urging Gardaí to work closely with Board of Management to create new safety guidelines after threats of a mass shooting were splayed on the walls this week.

Late Monday evening, following an emergency Board of Management meeting, the decision was taken to contact parents informing them of the closure at the school for Tuesday, December 5.

The sudden closure on the day of a planned ceremony for the school took place because of graffiti on a bathroom wall,  warning that a mass shooting would be carried out at the school on Tuesday, December 5.

It is understood that the content of the graffiti threatened to ‘shoot everyone’.

The school closed on Tuesday, December 5, and reopened the following day, Wednesday, December 6, amidst continuing Garda investigations.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul Ward said: “There is relief in the school that nothing happened.”

Cllr Ward says that he ‘fully supports’ the Board of Management decision to shut the school on short notice.

A notice on Scoil Dara website cited ‘student safety and welfare’ as reasons for the school’s closure.

Meanwhile, Cllr Ward is urgently calling for a safety policy to be implemented to deal with any further ‘sinister’  threat of a mass shooting at the school, or any other schools around the country.

Cllr Ward said: “I fully agree with the Board of Management’s decision to shut the school, every single teacher and parent should be happy with this decision. I would be asking now that a national policy for schools is implemented and treated with priority. This is the first of this kind of threat.”
