Mental Health Ireland invites Kildare residents to take part in potentially life-saving campaign

The initiative encourages people across Ireland to start meaningful conversations about mental health
Mental Health Ireland (MHI) has announced the return of 'Hello, How Are You?' Day, and has invited Kildare residents to take part in the potentially life-saving campaign.
Now in its fifth year, the campaign continues to grow and serve as reminder of the importance of connection and positive mental health.
According to the organisers, the campaign, which will take place on May 15, 2026, is built on a simple but powerful idea — "That a genuine 'Hello, how are you?' can be the start of meaningful connection, understanding, and support."
"Whether you're chatting with a friend, a colleague, a neighbour, or even a stranger, asking 'how are you?' — and truly listening to the answer — can help reduce stigma around mental health and remind us all that we're not alone," they added.
'IT CARRIES INCREDIBLE POWER'
At the heart of this year’s campaign is ambassador, TikTok star and Ireland AM presenter, Eric Roberts, who is using his platform to get the initiative rolling.
Speaking about the campaign, Eric said: "I’m absolutely delighted to be an ambassador for MHI and to support the Hello, How Are You? campaign this May.
"It’s such a simple question — 'Hello, how are you?’ — but it carries incredible power; taking a moment to check in with someone can make a real difference, letting them know they’re seen, heard, and not alone."
He added: "I’m proud to be part of a campaign that encourages all of us to connect, to listen, and to look out for one another."
The 'HELLO' steps
By using the HELLO Steps, you can feel supported in asking the key question:
- H — "Say Hello"
- E — "Engage with the person"
- L — "Listen to them"
- L — "Learn about them and what they might be saying"
- O — "Give them time to talk and to explore options"
Furthermore, to mark the day of awareness, MHI has partnered with Hairy Baby to launch a limited-edition 'Hello, How Are You?' T-shirt as Gaeilge, with all profits supporting MHI’s work.
Designed to spark conversations, the T-shirt offers a simple way for people to show their support and encourage people to get involved in the campaign.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Lastly, the organisers outlined ways to get involved
- Start a Conversation — "Reach out to someone – a friend, colleague, neighbour or someone who may be feeling isolated. Say hello, ask how they are, and take time to really listen"
- Host a Hello Event — "Organise a coffee morning, walk, lunch or team chat; schools, workplaces, community groups and virtual teams can all take part"
- Spread the Word Online — "On May 15, share a message, photo or video using #HelloHowAreYou to show your support and inspire others to connect"
