Kildare Co Council has confirmed that a 'substantial number' of motorists are breaking a 50km per hour speed limit on the Clane Inner Relief Road.

Officials said they recently carried out vehicle speed measurements on the busy route in a residential area which bypasses the town centre.

The Council said: "We are aware that a substantial number of motorists exceed the speed limit of 50km per hour on a daily basis."

This Clane Inner Relief Road may be included in a review of current speed limits.

The Council also said that the roundabout at Alexandra Manor needs to be re-aligned and narrowed to reduce the speeds of vehicles entering and exiting it.

Officials said: "The council agree with this view but note that it will require substantial funding to redesign and reconstruct  this roundabout."

Councillor Padraig McEvoy had raised the issue after receiving representations from local residents and called for traffic calming along the Inner Relief Road.
