Naas Court hears homeless woman steals slice of cake in Newbridge

A homeless woman who stole a slice of cake worth  approximately €1 appeared before Naas District Court today.

The 35-year-old woman pleaded guilty to the theft of a slice of cake from a shop in Newbridge on March 7, 2017.

Sgt Brian Jacob outlined how she was also charged on a separate incident after being found in possession of €20 worth of heroin.

Defence Solicitor, Timmy Kennelly said: "She was going through a very bad patch."

He told the court how due to her heroin addiction, she now has one leg shorter than the other.

Mr Kennelly said: "She woke up one morning and her leg snapped. There is no cartilage in her knee."

Defence outlined how she ended up on heroin after being made homeless.

The court heard how she has been off heroin for a year now.

Evidence was heard how she had three previous convictions including no insurance, failing to produce insurance in 2010 and shoplifting in 2012.

Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that she enter into a Probation  Bond for the Section 3 misuse of drugs charge. Section 1(1) was imposed for the theft of a slice of cake.
