A young man got sentenced to almost two years in prison along with being banned from driving for five years at Naas District Court today for being a passenger in a stolen car and for the theft of a significant amount of meat from Aldi.
The 20-year-old Romanian man has been in custody since September 14, last, after objections were made to bail.
Detective Séamus Doyle outlined in court today how the accused pleaded guilty in relation to being in a stolen car, that was parked in Kildare Village Shopping Centre car park, on September 13, 2017.
He pleaded guilty to Section 4 theft at Aldi on August 6, 2017.
Detective Doyle outlined how the accused entered Aldi at Greyabbey, Kildare town, and filled a trolley that mainly contained meats, along with a pair of shoes. The contents of the trolley was worth €1, 460.
He pleaded not guilty to three charges of possession of implements on September 13, 2017.
Evidence was given that the accused went out to try and open doors while his accomplice pushed the trolley.
The court heard how when approached, the accused took off at speed in a car.
Detective Doyle said that separately the accused was seen leaving a car that was parked at Kildare Village, and that the car had been stolen in Galway.
Defence Barrister, Aishling Murphy, asked Judge Desmond Zaidan to take into account that the accused had been in custody since September 14, last.
She outlined that the accused had studied Social Sciences in Romania.
Detective Doyle outlined how the accused has six previous convictions. receiving a suspended sentence on May 24, 2017, for possession of implements. He had been ordered to keep the peace for all the people of Ireland and not to reoffend. He was convicted and fined €200 for Section 4 theft on 16 May, 2017. He was also sentenced to six months suspended for dangerous driving.
For being a passenger in a stolen car, he was banned from driving for five years.
The accused has been ordered to appear in relation to the charges for being found in possession of implements on December 18, next.
He was sentenced to 11 months in prison for being in a stolen car and 11 months in prison for theft from Aldi.
