A popular Sinn Féin Cllr along with six other of the party's representatives in Naas handed in their resignations this morning, due to alleged bullying.
Cllr Sorcha O'Neill, a sitting Cllr for the Naas area over four years, is stepping down, due to what she alleges is bullying.
Speaking to KildareNow this morning she said: "It comes with a heavy heart. I felt that I was left with no other option. I am very disappointed that it has gone this way. It is a very difficult time, it has been a long time coming.''
Cllr O'Neill alleges that there is a 'hostile system' within the party.
She claimed: "It is impacting on people's sleep, I have people telling me they are having nightmares about arguments. We have been insulted, disrespected.''
Cllr O'Neill plans to remain on as an Independent Cllr.
Sources have also confirmed that four additional members of the Wolfe Tone cumann in Naas are also leaving.
A further two members have withdrawn from local structures but will remain as card-carrying members of the party.
Some of the resigning members have been in the party for over 30 years.
A national Sinn Féin spokesperson said:"We regret that Cllr Sorcha O’Neill has decided to leave the party. It is our belief that she was a dedicated and capable member of our team and on the council. We acknowledge that there are difficulties present in the area which we are working to address. We wish Sorcha all the best in the future."
