The car ‘fishtailed’ and ended up on the other side of the road

A car driven by a British Army soldier "somersaulted three or four times” before it came to rest on the roof, Naas District Court heard.

Aged in his 20s and originally from greater the Naas area, he was prosecuted for driving offences.

Sgt Mary Meade told the court that the car “flipped” three or four times after it “fishtailed.”

The incident happened on the R407 at Blackhall, Clane, on August 22, 2025.

Sgt Meade said the defendant ended up on the other side of the road.

The court was told the vehicle was written off and the defendant was discharged from treatment without any injury.

Solicitor Joe Coonan said the defendant is a soldier in the UK and did not attend court because his commanding officer would not grant him leave to do so.

The defendant was instead represented by a family member.

The court heard that the defendant had no previous convictions and while there was a trace of cocaine in his system it was not at a level to warrant a prosecution.

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a four years driving disqualification for dangerous driving along with a €1,500 fine. He was also disqualified for four years and fined €1,000 for driving with excess alcohol. The disqualifications will run concurrently.
