Cola like Coke and Pepsi can cause some more fizz than thought
Drinking Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola can enhance testosterone, a recent study has found.
A study carried out on mice showed that drinking carbonated drinks can also increase testicle size.
The Northwest Minzu University in China was attempting to determine the impact of carbonated beverages on fertility and sex organs in men.
The study found that mice drinking Coke and 100 percent Pepsi, as opposed to a mixture of Pepsi and water, had a significant change.
The mice that were given pure Coca-Cola were found to have higher levels of the male hormone compared to the group that drank water.
The study conducted research on three groups of mice – the first group only drank water, the second drank different levels of Coca Cola while a third drank different levels of Pepsi, over a 15-day period.
Tests on the rodents involved weighing their testicles and drawing blood. Tests were conducted on day one, along with day five, seven, 10 and 15.
The study concluded that a high concentration of Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola could raise testis longitudinal diameter (TLD) and testes transverse diameters (TDD), enhance testosterone secretion, and increase serum epidermal growth factor (EGF). concentrations
"The outcomes demonstrated a high dose of Pepsi-Cola or Coca-Cola could promote testis growth and development," the report's results state.
The research protocol was approved by the Experiment Animal Care and Use Committee of Gansu province, the People’s Republic of China.
"All mice were treated as per ethical rules," the report adds.
