Irish public transport fares are some of the highest around the world

Dublin is one of the most costly cities for public transport, with other Irish cities faring better according to recent research.

Picodi.com checked the public transport fares in 45 cities worldwide and juxtaposed the transport expenses with local average wages.

Findings included:

- The most expensive single tickets can be found in London (€4.85), Zurich (€4.44) and Oslo (€3.65)

- The highest prices for monthly passes are paid by citizens of London (€253), Melbourne (€178) and Dublin (€155)

- In this ranking, Dublin is among the most expensive cities – as mentioned above, a monthly pass costs €155, which is 5.2% of the average net wage in Dublin. This result is better than in London (7.4%) but worse than in Melbourne (5.1%)

- Other Irish cities, such as Cork and Limerick are much more approachable (€68 and €60 respectively)

- In three out of 45 cities, public transport is entirely free for citizens – Luxembourg, Estonia's capital, Tallinn and Malta's capital, Valletta.

The findings come just after the Central Statistics Office released figures to show that public transport have risen in recent weeks.

The number of bus journeys in Dublin for week 8 (week beginning 20 February 2023) was 10% higher compared with the number of journeys in the same week in 2019.

The number of bus journeys outside Dublin in week 8 of 2023 exceeded 2019 figures by 31%.

The number of new cars licensed in February 2023 fell by 359 vehicles (-3%) compared with February 2022.

There were 13 fatalities on Irish roads in February 2023 compared with 20 in January 2023.

Last April, the Government reduced public transport fares by 20 per cent.
