Before you take to the road this summer break take a few minutes to consider these tips to save you time, hassle, money and keep safe:
Check everything over
Making a basic mechanical check of the car before setting off will make all the difference between a smooth journey and one at risk of breakdown and delays.
Tyres - check the pressure of each tyre, including the spare tyre, and pay attention to the recommended pressure levels. See the manufacturer’s specifications for correct inflation pressure. Examine your tyres for cuts, cracks and bulges, which could cause unexpected ‘blow-outs.’
Lights - check that all lights on your vehicle are working properly and replace any bulbs where necessary. The RSA explain that your lights, reflectors, number plate lighting and direction indicators will be effective only if you keep them clean and in good working order.
Windscreen - make sure your windscreen wipers and wiper blades in good working condition and keep your windscreen washer fluid topped up.
Oil - Check your engine has enough oil and coolant before setting off. This reduces the risk of the engine overheating or seizing up when on the road.
Get prepared
Plan out your route and get your directions sorted before you leave. Distractions from fiddling with a phone for maps or directions is dangerous and the cause of a huge number of accidents every year. Don't use your phone for anything while driving. Make sure to also check traffic conditions as the summer holidays is predicted to be one of busiest periods.
Fuel up
It may seem like an obvious one but the many cars are recovered from the roadside every year due to running out of fuel. Check your fuel levels before you set off and fill up if necessary. The RSA advises motorists to make sure that your vehicle has enough fuel to at least take you to the next fuel or charging station before begin a long motorway journey.
Take short breaks from driving
It is essential that you take a short breaks from driving when on a long-distance road trip away. If you're tired, pull over someone safe. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs, grab a coffee or take a 15 minute nap.
