Carlow's deathtrap N80 sees fifth severe crash in a year

Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision on Carlow's N80 road which has five severe accidents in the past year

Another crash on N80 in Carlow marks an alarming trend on troubled stretch of road

The N80 road in Carlow has witnessed a concerning pattern of accidents on the same stretch of road in recent times.

A fatal single vehicle road traffic collision occurred last night, at approximately 11:30pm on Wednesday 31st January 2024, on the N80 at Leagh between Glynns Bus Cross and Tinryland. Three occupants of the car, the driver and two passengers, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Another passenger in the car, a man in his 20s, was taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny

Father-of-one William Power Jnr, from Kilbranish, Bunody was killed when his car was in a collision with a truck shortly before 7am on Wednesday 6th September 2023. The collision also took place on the N80, at Ballybeg between Castletown Cross and Glynns Bus Cross.

On 22nd February 2023, a crash occurred on the N80 just north of the Fighting Cocks pub between the M9 junction at Tinryland and Glynns Bus Cross at approximately 4.30pm. One person was airlifted to hospital and three people were injured requiring medical attention following the serious two-vehicle collision. 

Three people were taken to hospital when their car ended up in a field after a crash on the N80 in Carlow around 1pm on Wednesday 1st February 2023. The two-car crash occurred, again, on the N80 near the Fighting Cocks. Two cars clipped each other at Temple Peter Graveyard with one going off the road and into a field. The driver and two passengers of one car were taken to hospital by ambulance.

A crash occurred Friday morning, 27th January 2023, on the N80 in Carlow at Ballykealy between Ballon and the Fighting Cocks. Gardaí reported that one car was involved and a pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

While the community mourns the lives lost, local authorities will now be under heightened pressure to assess the factors contributing to this alarming trend and implement measures to enhance road safety on the N80 in Carlow.
