KILKENNY

The late Maureen Mullins (RIP)

In the passing of Maureen Mullins, aged 94, the racing world bid farewell today to a remarkable figure whose invincible spirit and unwavering dedication left an everlasting mark on the sport she loved.

With a lifetime devoted to horses and racing, Maureen's legacy as the mother of Irish racing will be remembered for generations to come. Her funeral took place today at Church of the Holy Trinity, Goresbridge, and was attended by large crowds including the aide-de-camp of the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins.

Mourners heard of a proud and faithful Goresbridge woman who had a wonderful life. She adored her grandchildren and was proud of each and every one of them. They recited the Prayers of the Faithful at today's funeral Mass. Her son Tony Mullins gave a touching and at-times humourous eulogy, recounting the details of a fascinating life well lived.

Her early years were shaped by a passion for horses and the thrill of the race. While many of her siblings played musical instruments, young Maureen’s interests were hunting and show jumping.

From her carefree beginnings on the family farm to the heights of international acclaim, Maureen's life journey showed how strong and determined she was.

She moved from the idyllic countryside of Carlow to the bustling streets of Dublin, where she embarked on a career as a secretary for the British Paint Company. It was during this time that she crossed paths with her future husband, Paddy Mullins, a meeting that would forever alter the course of her life.

Maureen and Paddy's journey began when they first met at the tender age of 14, bonding over their shared love for equestrian pursuits while hunting with the Mount Loftus Harriers. They were married in 1954 and had five children - Sandra, Willie, Tom, George, and Tony.

As the beloved wife of the late Paddy Mullins, Maureen played an instrumental role in his distinguished career as a trainer and jockey. Behind every great man, it is said, stands an even greater woman, and Maureen's unwavering support and encouragement were the bedrock of Paddy's success.

Together, they forged a partnership that became synonymous with excellence, earning acclaim on tracks both at home and abroad. The couple were married for 54 years, until Paddy’s passing 12 years ago.

Maureen, whose equestrian expertise extended to successful point-to-point riding, gave her two wins in the sport, noting her last ride two decades ago at the age of 75. Fondly remembered for outpacing her daughter Sandra to clinch third place in a race at Gowran in 1982, a moment treasured by both mother and daughter.

Throughout her life, Maureen remained a pillar of strength and inspiration to her family, including sons Willie, Tom, and Tony, and grandson Emmet, who followed in her footsteps as stewards of Ireland's racing dynasty. With grandsons Danny, Patrick, David and Charlie in the saddle, the Mullins dynasty continues to dominate the racing world.

With a keen eye for talent and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Maureen's influence extended far beyond the racecourse. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and the hearts she inspired, leaving an indelible imprint on the fabric of Irish racing. Maureen always graced the track, elegantly dressed with a big smile, leaving everyone struck by her warmth and wit.

In her final years, Maureen reflected on a life well-lived, filled with the thrill of victory and camaraderie shared with fellow race goers. From the triumphs of Vintage Tipple victory ridden by Frankie Dettori, in the 2003 Irish Oaks to the iconic Height of Fashion and the legendary Dawn Run. Her memories are a testament to her enduring passion for the sport.

As we bid farewell to Maureen Mullins, we celebrate her legacy that will forever be enshrined in the annals of Irish racing history. She was a beacon of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her spirit continue to gallop on in the hearts of racing enthusiasts around the world, a fitting tribute to the lady and mother of Irish racing.
