Illicit cigarettes worth nearly €5m seized at Dublin Port

Investigations are underway following the seizure of around 5.8 million illicit cigarettes at Dublin Port

Investigations are underway following the seizure of around 5.8 million illicit cigarettes at Dublin Port.

The seizure was made on Tuesday when a search was carried out as a result of risk profiling.

"The illicit cigarettes, branded ‘Richmond Blue’, ‘Lambert & Butler Original Blue’ and ‘Lambert & Butler Original Silver’, were discovered in a trailer which had arrived from Zeebrugge, Belgium and represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €3,823,000," said a spokesperson.

No further information has been publicly disclosed as investigations are ongoing.

Revenue says the seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the sale and supply of illegal cigarettes and tobacco in the shadow economy.

If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they are urged to contact Revenue on 1800 295.
