American actress Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in the popular TV shows Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, has died aged 53, her publicist has confirmed.
The US star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
In a statement to People, her publicist Leslie Sloane said: "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty.
"On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease."
"The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace," Sloane continued.
In 2017, Doherty revealed her breast cancer had returned after going into remission. She kept the return of her cancer secret while she worked on the BH90210 reboot in 2019.
"It's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I'm stage 4. So my cancer came back, and that's why I'm here," Doherty previously revealed on US talk show Good Morning America. "I don't think I've processed it. It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways."
Doherty rose to fame in 1990 as Brenda Walsh on Fox's Beverly Hills, 90210.
Shannen Doherty had visited Ireland on a regular basis, and previously told Irish media that she loved the country of her ancestors very much.
The actress boasted of her Irish-American heritage, which she said informed her performance as the Irish American spoilt kid, Brenda Walsh, on the 90’s drama, 90210.
