A diver has died after getting into difficulty in the sea off Co Donegal.
The man, who was aged in his 50s, was diving in waters several kilometres off Tory Island on Monday afternoon.
He was recovered from the water by Malin Coastguard and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where he was later declared dead.
Local councillor Declan Meehan expressed his sympathies.
“This is a huge tragedy for the family and friends of the man involved and we send our condolences to them,” he told the PA news agency.
“I also want to pay tribute to the Coastguard who responded to this situation.”
A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai were alerted to an incident in the water North West of Donegal on Monday afternoon, July 22 2024.
“A male, 50s, got into difficulty in the water.
“He was removed from the water by Malin Coastguard and brought to Letterkenny University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
“A file will now be prepared for the Coroner’s Court.”
