The army chaplain stabbed in Galway barracks has thanked people for their "love and concern" as an investigation is ongoing to determine whether terrorism was a motive in the attack.
In a message shared on Facebook this morning, Fr Paul F Murphy, aged in his 50s, updated his community after being stabbed a number of times.
"Friends, thank you for your prayers, love, and concern. Sorry that I can't reply to all messages and take all the calls coming my way. I'm doing okay; just awaiting surgery. All will be well," Fr Murphy said.
Fr Murphy is recovering in the hospital.
A 16-year-old teen was arrested and Gardaí said in a statement that they are investigating a possible terror motive in the attack.
Their anti-terror investigators, the Special Detective Unit, are involved in the investigation.
The incident took place at approximately 10.45pm on Thursday at Renmore Army Barracks when a young man approached the chaplain and allegedly attacked him.
It is understood Fr Murphy was entering the barracks when he was approached by the 16-year-old. He was taken to University Hospital Galway following the incident.
Gardaí have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and do not believe it is a broader conspiracy.
